Petition the City Council to either KEEP or REMOVE added Fluoride from our Water Supply!

First and foremost, this is not an issue with or about Dentists. We respect Dentists and their invaluable contribution to society. The issue at hand is with mass-medicating the public – whether they need it or not – by adding Fluoride to municipal water supplies. This is a much larger conversation that should include all aspects of health and well-being, not just dentistry.

Benefits of Fluoride:

7.5% decrease in cavities. Note that tooth decay is recognized as a DISEASE. Also note that tooth decay is caused by lifestyle choices like eating foods high in carbohydrates frequently or inadequately brushing teeth.

Contrary to popular belief, many well-known, accredited DDSes oppose fluoridation!
The EPA has no safe limit of Fluoride discharge into the environment. Yet, when we add Fluoride chemicals to our drinking water supply, we may:
- Discharge it down the drain to waste treatment facilities, which cannot remove the fluoride before discharging treated water back into the environment
- Water our lawns, once again discharging fluoride into the environment when there is no safe discharge level
Mass-medicating the 93% of the population not benefiting from Fluoride against their consent.
In certain instances:
- Lowers IQ in children
- Causes Skeletal Fluorosis (brittle bones, breaks, deformations, etc.)
POTENTIALLY implicated in increases in Breast and Prostate cancers, Thyroid and other similar conditions*
Unfairly penalizing those who cannot afford advanced filtration to remove fluoride from our water. These advanced filters cost, at minimum, $200 dollars for removal from only drinking water using Reverse-Osmosis to several thousands of dollars to fully remove from ALL water (shower/baths, etc.).
One of the most hazardous chemicals to work with; it eats through the city’s metal pipes, valves, pumps, and poses a grave danger to city employees and contractors that must maintain the fluoride injection process

Additional FACTS:

“Caries-preventive effect of fluoride is almost exclusively posteruptive” – i.e. – Fluoride works topically, not ingested. Sources claiming otherwise are outdated and neglect recent research.
Fluoride levels maintained in water assume an average-sized adult is drinking an average amount of water. Smaller bodied individuals – like children and babies – and those who drink more water – like babies on forumula and athletes – will be exposed to a higher DOSE of Fluoride than was initially intended by doctors advocating fluoridation
Most European counties DO NOT fluoridate their water due to drawbacks/health concerns

Currently, the HHS does not condone fluoride
2 states ban fluoridation, Florida and Utah, with at least five others including Nebraska, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire considering a ban.
Many cities in Iowa have also recently eliminated fluoridation
Many cities around Monona DO NOT fluoridate their water!!!
Main fluoride compounds used to fluoridate water are byproducts of the fertilizer industry. They cannot discharge back into the environment; they must either:
- Pay to process the byproducts, or
- Sell it to municipalities to dispose of “legally”, like when we water our lawns, flush our toilets, or take showers (or drink it!!!)
Cavity rates in European countries that do not fluoridate their water are dropping just as quickly as states in the US who do fluoridate, suggesting there is an outside factor improving our teeth – not water fluoridation itself.

* Americans suffer from iodine deficiency – which is why we iodize our salt. Deficiency is caused by both:

Not ingesting enough iodine/iodide, and
Elements such as Fluoride displace Iodine. This is explained by looking at the Periodic table of the Elements: Iodine, Bromine, Chlorine, and Fluoride exist in the same column and form the similar compounds with other elements. However, Iodine is the least-reactive, and in the presence of Bromine, Chlorine, or especially Fluoride, they will substitute themselves, replacing and inactivating Iodine, a critical element in Thyroid, Breast, and Prostate function.
